Junior Achievement’s mission supports the workforce of the future
by Anne-Kathryn Flanagan
Unum Group’s commitment to helping people thrive throughout life’s moments extends to our approach to social responsibility, and our partnership with Junior Achievement (JA) supports youth in the communities where we live and work.
JA’s skills-based programs focus on entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy to empower the next generation with critical knowledge to navigate the workforce of the future.
“JA’s purpose of inspiring and preparing young people to succeed aligns with Unum Group’s values and is why I volunteer my time,” said Joy Michaud, Vice President, IDI & LTD Benefits.
Unum Group supports JA in Atlanta, Baton Rouge, La., Chattanooga, Tenn., Columbia, S.C., and Portland, Maine through grants and employee-directed giving, board service, and employee-participation in volunteer activities.
Our grant support of Junior Achievement in Baton Rouge helps about 1,200 teens build personal finance, business, and work readiness skills through motivational speakers, confidence-building activities, and one-on-one mentorships. The financial literacy curriculum in Chattanooga helps more than 650 elementary school students in Hamilton County focus on financial responsibility through the “JA in a Day” program.
The Junior Achievement of Greater South Carolina’s JA Finance Park Mobile program in Columbia teaches high school students how to budget and make smart financial decisions. More than 3,000 students in Greater Portland school districts have access to financial literacy education, career planning, entrepreneurship training and workforce readiness experiences.
Through our support of Junior Achievement, Unum Group is helping to provide equitable opportunities for socio-economically disadvantaged students to thrive.
